We are always looking for new members in our hobby, and are glad you are interested. We are a diverse unit, and have a variety of backgrounds, age, and reenacting experience. We would have happy to talk with you about how you would fit with our unit.

Each reenacting unit in the WCWA is different, and it is important to find a group of people that you are comfortable with. Many veteran reenactors will tell you that the best part of the hobby is the comradeship that is developed over time. Reenacting is a hobby that is best when you are with friends and are sharing the experience with people that have similar expectations.

As one of the largest and most established Union units, the 20th Maine places a high value on authenticity and comradeship. We set a high standard for ourselves both on the battlefield and off. We are always one of the best drilled (although maybe not best looking) units. While in camp, we engage the public, educating in fun ways and answering questions about the Civil War.

Although authenticity and education are our primary goals, we also have a lot of fun. From a shared company mess, clambakes, Christmas gift exchanges, a “sponsorship” system for new members, and a clothes and gear exchange system, members of the 20th legitimately enjoy each others company both inside and outside of reenactments.

To keep ourselves sharp over the winter “offseason,” we hold a Drill Day each month. These are held at the old Ft. Steilicoom in Lakewood, WA. If you have never been to a reenactment, these drill days provide a great way to meet other members and get a taste of what reenacting is like. We have plenty of loaner gear for first timers. For new recruits, we also have this (detailed) document outlining the things every reenactor should know: Recruiting Manual_20th Maine. Feel free to read at your leisure.
